Why we worship the way we do?
David praised the Lord in the presence of the whole assembly, saying, "Praise be to you, O Lord, God of our father Israel, from everlasting to everlasting. Yours, O Lord, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the majesty and the splendor, for everything in heaven and earth is yours. Yours, O Lord, is the kingdom; you are exalted as head over all. Wealth and honor come from you; you are the ruler of all things. In your hands are strength and power to exalt and give strength to all. Now, our God, we give you thanks, and praise your glorious name." 1 Chronicles 29:10-13
Like David we experience the love and grace of God in our lives daily. We see that everything we have
comes from Him. Our salvation, health, financial provision, food, shelter–even our bodies–were formed
by him. How can we express gratitude for such love and greatness? We can only worship God with what we have.
Romans 12:1 says:
"...offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God...which is your spiritual worship."
The Bible and the lives of the people in the Bible help us find expressive forms of worship such as:
Singing
"Sing out your praises to our God and King. Yes, sing your highest praise to our King, the King of all the earth. Sing thoughtful praises!" Psalms 47:6 LBPlaying Instruments
"Praise God in his sanctuary; praise him in his mighty heavens.Praise him for his acts of power; praise him for his surpassing greatness.
Praise him with the sounding of the trumpet, praise him with the harp and lyre,
Praise him with tambourine and dancing, praise him with the strings and flute,
Praise him with the clash of cymbals, praise him with resounding cymbals.
Let everything that has breath praise the Lord"
Psalms 150
Lifting our Hands
"Lift up your hands in the sanctuary and praise the Lord."Psalms 134:2 "We also lift up holy hands in prayer."
Timothy 2:8 Clapping our Hands and Shouts of Joy "Clap your hands all you people, shout unto God with a voice of triumph." Psalms 47:1 Not only are all people to clap their hands in praise but all of God's creation is to clap as an expression of joy.
Isaiah 55:12
Dancing
Dancing goes together with music and joy. Therefore it is no wonder that we find verses in the Bible like Psalms 30:11, Psalms 149:3 and Psalms 150:4 admonishing us to dance before the Lord. Forms of dancing may vary. In Exodus 15:20 we see that Mariam took a tambourine and led the women in dancing. In 2 Samuel 6:14 David danced before the Lord with all his might. Dancing may sometimes show beauty and form and at other times joy and excitement.Teaching and Preaching
"Day after day, in the temple courts and from house to house they never stopped teaching and proclaiming the good news that Jesus is Lord."Acts 5:42
"Until I come, devote yourselves to the public reading of scriptures, to preaching and teaching."
1 Timothy 4:13
Singing in the Spirit
Jesus said true worshipers will worship in spirit and truth (John 4:23-24). Our whole being can praise the Lord–spirit, soul and body. When our spirit praises the Lord, it may be expressed in different ways. It may be like the day of Pentecost (Acts 2:1-6, 11). The disciples began to speak in other languages and those who heard said they were declaring the wonders of God. This will sometimes happen in English or another language. As Paul states: "What shall I do? I will pray with my spirit, but I will also pray with my mind, I will sing with my spirit, but I will also sing with my mind." I Corinthians 14:15 Singing in the spirit will be spontaneous, either by an individual or by the congregation.
Giving
Worship expresses thankfulness for what God has done for us. What better time to give of our tithes and offerings to him. If you are visiting us, please do not feel obligated to give. Tithes and offerings are for those who call Redeemer Fellowship their church home and desire to support the ministry of the Lord there.Waving Flags
"May there be shouts of joy when we hear the news of your victory, flags flying with praises to God for all that He has done for you. May He answer all your prayers!" Psalms 20:5The Lord's Supper (Communion)
Jesus says in Luke 22:19 "Do this in remembrance of me..." As we worship God for how great He is and all He does for us, we should never forget to thank him for making our life in him possible by the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Communing with the Lord is foundational to worship and so we come to the Table of the Lord in the midst of worship. The various forms of worship are ways we can express our joy, our praise, our thanksgiving...through the things God has given us, whether it is with our body, spirit, soul or instruments. The greatest satisfaction is to see God enthroned on our praises (Psalms 22:4)
This is why we worship the way we do.
